Mapleton Utah City – Update on Relief Society Hall
Thank you for your interest in the 1888 Mapleton Relief Society Hall. Many have reached out to the committee (Mapleton Utah City), interested in participating, and wanting to donate to this exciting community project. This treasure is one of only 11 Relief Society Halls built in Utah County and one of two remaining halls still intact in their original form. Work is busily happening behind the scenes to prepare to move the Hall to Mapleton City property. Skilled tradesmen have come forward and we are still looking for more, to donate time and expertise in the process. We will continue to keep you updated and will let you know when we can start accepting financial donations. In the upcoming Mapleton Utah City Newsletters, we will be sharing some of the bustling activity in the Mapleton Relief Society Hall from 1888 to 1922.
Faithful Woman of Mapleton Utah
The Power of Wheat Dedicated and faithful women in the Mapleton Female Society took their grain saving charge seriously. In 1876, Brigham Young asked Emmeline B. Wells to organize a wheat storage program among the women of the church. “The women in Mapleton gleaned fields after the harvest was completed by the owner of the field. The Relief Society visiting teachers solicited wheat or money to buy wheat as they visited their districts in the early years of the movement. Year after year the women faithfully gathered and stored wheat in any way they could.” according to Ralph K. Harmer in the History of Mapleton, Utah until 1945. The women would watch the market and buy when prices were low and sell when they were high. Tips about combating pests and when to buy or sell were discussed at various Relief Society Meetings.
Mapleton Utah City Granary
In 1888 the women were able to earn enough money to build their own Relief Society Hall and Granary. Meticulous records of donations, purchases, sales and distributions were kept. In 1916, the Mapleton women had outgrown their space and moved to the old Mapleton Church. The granary was in use until 1922 when all the scattered wheat funds were collectively gathered in Salt Lake to pay for maternity hospitals and child-welfare work.Wheat stalks have long represented Relief Society as a symbol of preparedness and plenty. Our Mapleton heritage continues, and our Relief Society Hall will be a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of many determined women.
